Black Forest Alpacas is owned and operated by Greg and Sandy Smith in Black Forest, Colorado. We are just 10 miles northeast of Colorado Springs and southeast of Denver about 60 miles. We started our alpaca business in the spring of 2004 and moved to our new 35-acre farm in early 2005. One of our farm goals is to raise high quality alpacas for sale at a reasonable price. Quality bloodlines are very important to us and the following list of "Best in the Industry" herdsires are just some of our current bloodlines: HEMINGWAY, FELIX, GUELLERMO, ROYAL FAWN, AUGUSTO,CALIGULA, BUENO, DOM LUCILIO, CAMELOT, DAKOTIA, DON JUAN, PRESIDIO, ELITE, ION, INVINCIBLE, BIG HOSS, DRAMBUIE, AUZENGATE, PLURO, DANKO, EL MOUSTACHIO and many others. These bloodlines come from the biggest and highest quality farms in North America.
We come from a long line of pioneer farmers & ranchers from South Dakota and Nebraska. Our families have been in the livestock business for generations and it has always been a desire to return to our "roots". Sandy & I each served in the Air Force for 20 years and retired in 2004. Our alpaca research started back in 1996 and we finally were able to put the wheels in motion in 2004! We started with 4 pregnant females. Since that initial purchase, we have added 26 crias born to our farm. We currently have 56 Huacaya alpacas. Our most recent expansion came in late in 2007, when our mentors, Chuck & Helen Stewart of Stewart's Royal Alpacas, approached us about buying their herd because they wanted to retire. As a result, we have grown over 1,000% in 4 years and we have 6 top-quality herdsires as well as numerous bred & open females to select from.
We are excited about the alpaca business and where it is going in the future. We are always trying to learn more about our industry and hope to pass that information onto our friends and customers.
